Mildew Fairy goth Skateboard

$77.05

Mildew Fairy goth Skateboard

I got the idea for this one the other night when my husband was cleaning the bathroom. No - really! Does the mildew fairy every visit your house? I've shown "Mildew" here hiding in some dank basement, working her yucky spell. Great grimy greens and ambient lighting really make this piece "pop" right out at you, and it shows how everything - even moldy old mildew - can be beautiful! My own original acrylic painting.

"Dinosaur Friends II" Greeting Card

$4.14

"Dinosaur Friends II" Greeting Card

"Dinosaur Friends 2" is the title - one of my favorite paintings I've done yet, and my first of 2010! Quick background - when I was a very little girl I had some allegedly "imaginary" friends of mine which were dinosaurs. An amateur paleontologist even then, I remember them more clearly and distinctly than I do most of my other friends from that age. So I thought I'd create a series of paintings inspired by them. This litle girl has dinosaur friends as well (but seems to have a much nicer house than I did!). Her eyes are striking - golden, almost reptilian. Her bedroom is in high Rococo style, and she even has a Spinosaurus friend (one of my personal favorite dinosaurs, as well as my nephew Luke's!). My own original acrylic painting.

"Alice and the Bosch Birds" Stationery

$1.85

"Alice and the Bosch Birds" Stationery

"Alice and the Bosch Birds" is the title - one of my favourite Alice in Wonderland paintings I've done yet! This is the fourth in my sub-series called "Alice in Other Lands" which are paintings featuring Alice in a variety of unusual circumstances inspired by old Masters and Art History movements in general. This is a take on "Alice and the Birds" - here we have my Alice in a surreal landscape featuring numerous Hieronymus Bosch references. Bosch always painted lovely birds, and of course Alice encounters some rather unusal birds in her travels, so I decided to combine the two. The fish monster steed and flying fish are Bosch references as well. I've always thought that Alice's adventures should continue into many other bizarre tales, and you can expect to see more from me in the future. Hieronymus Bosch is a huge influence on my work - a big part of the reason I became interested in gothic and fantasy art. My own lowbrow big eyed take Bosch's work - a celebration of my love for Art History in general as well. This is my own original acrylic painting.

"Lotus Fairy" Mug

"Lotus Fairy" Mug

"Lotus Fairy" - a little more ethereal than my usual works - probably inspired by a recent visit from my sister Kachina (who loves yoga)! Here is a fairy creature (looking very mystically enlightened and at peace) sitting in the traditional yoga Lotus position - also sitting upon a Lotus flower. The Lotus pool behind her is whispering away into the night sky as the lily pads are transformed into colourful stars.... My own original acrylic painting.

"Madonna of the Shells" Postcard

$3.10

"Madonna of the Shells" Postcard

"Madonna of the Shells"- the classic image of the Madonna, blending the iconic style with the beauty of nature - specifically that of the sea! Beautiful seashells and corals are painted on the side panels. She has a lovely halo I did in gold leaf. Of course, I had to include my personal favourite of all the shells - the Nautilus - a perfect spiral symbolizing infinity. My husband Matt did the woodwork for the original piece (it was an actual folding triptych, three panels with hinges - medieval/renaissance style). This is my own original acrylic painting.

"Amphitrite" Stationery

$1.85

"Amphitrite" Stationery

"Amphitrite"! Amphitrite of course is a sea-goddess, sometime-mermaid, Nereid, and wife of the great Poseidon in Greek mythology. I love this painting, it has a great little seascape, a darling cherubic baby (the baby? Perhaps a young Rhode? Baby Triton? Depends which legends you listen to!). The baby is riding on one of the classical dolphin/dragon/fishes that I love - and of course dolphins and many other sea creatures are included in the offspring of Amphitrite. And a nautilus - perhaps it's the mystery of their perfect "golden" spiral shape, but I'm fascinated with Nautilus shells, and love to paint them. I debuted this one at Dragon*Con 2010 in a phenomenal custom frame my husband Matt made for me. My own original acrylic painting.

"The Little Match Girl" Postcard

$3.10

"The Little Match Girl" Postcard

"The Little Match Girl" is an illustration for my Fairytale Oracle deck (with author Lucy Cavendish) due out in 2015. A classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen, one of the saddest children's stories of all time, if you ask me! This poor little thing is on her last match, shortly to die from the cold as the snow swirls around her. There is a message of hope here however, as she reunites with her beloved grandmother in heaven. This is an acrylic painting, I had a wonderful time with the many layers of paint - glazing it with a lot of water to create the beautiful lighting in this piece.

"Alice and Las Meninas" Postcard

$3.10

"Alice and Las Meninas" Postcard

"Alice and Las Meninas" is the title - one of my favourite Alice in Wonderland paintings I've done yet (heck, one of my favourite paintings of any kind I've done yet)! This is the third painting in my sub-series called "Alice in Other Lands" which are paintings featuring Alice in a variety of unusual circumstances, thrown into settings inspired by my love of art history (be sure to check out the first two installments honoring Bosch and da Vinci). Here we have my Alice on the set of one of the most beautiful and famous paintings in the world - "Las Meninas" (the Handmaidens") by 17th century painter Diego Velázquez - the epitome of Spanish Baroque. This is of course my version (for comparison, check out s Las Meninas, hehe). In my painting, Alice is playing the little princess (Infanta Margarita of Spain). Lewis Carroll has a cameo as the painter in this piece (Velázquez). The handmaidens truly must be from the court of the Queen of Hearts. In the distance you can see the Mad Hatter sneaking out the back, the Duchess holding a squealing pig, and the King of Hearts looking typically downtrodden and bedraggled. And lo and behold, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum have squeezed their way into the portrait too. Also if you look at the portrait on the back wall, you may see the White Rabbit! My favourite part though has got to be the devilish Cheshire Cat who has seemingly replaced Velázquez's faithful hound. This is a painting celebrating my loves of Alice in Wonderland and Baroque art - no reason why the two shouldn't go together! I've always thought that Alice's adventures should continue into many other bizarre tales, and you can expect to see more from me in the future. My own lowbrow big eyed take on Velázquez's work was one of my largest paintings to date, and took longer than any other painting I've completed (over three days, which is a long time for me!). This is my own original acrylic painting, completely painted by hand.

"Clockwork Dragonling" Postcard

$3.10

"Clockwork Dragonling" Postcard

A very special piece I debuted & sold this piece for the Dragon*Con 2014 Art Show - it was created for Dragon*Con's convention room key cards for the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (and also graced the back of the DragonCon pocket program books too!). I am so happy with how this one turned out - my little dragonling is clockwork - made of metal - and his fairy / angel companion has a definite steampunk flair with her aviator goggles and mechanical wings. Since it was a room key card design, I incorporated the "old" DragonCon logo into the shape of the key shown (and the "new" DragonCon logo was added up in the sky for the actual key card & promo materials - not shown). The original piece sold, but prints, canvases & posters are available. This is my own original acrylic painting.

$3.10

"Mechanical Angel I" Postcard

Mechanical Angel I - the FIRST in a new series - a Steampunk series - called "Mechanical Angels" (and this one is the first in the series - all will be different but feature simialr clockwork/gothic themes). This first painting - "Mechanical Angel I" features a gorgeous big eyed angel girl - quite doll-like - with wings right out of Da Vinci's notebook, and a plethora of clockwork gears and scientific implements around her. She even has a glowing butterfly in some sort of stasis container. This piece looks even prettier in person - the "glowing" blue-green lights almost do seem to glow amongst the subtle coluration of the mechanics. My own original acrylic painting.

"Anglerfish Submarine" Postcard

$3.10

"Anglerfish Submarine" Postcard

Anglerfish Submarine - one of my favourites I've painted to date (Matt's too). Some of you may have noticed my fascination with deep-sea abyssal sea creatures, as well as steampunk theming, and this painting combines them both. A beautiful violet eyed girl sits within the interior of an elaborate submarine which looks all the world like a clockwork anglerfish (lanternfish). Okay, it's kind of an odd painting, but there is something very striking and magical about it - kinda Jules Verne. Who doesn't love a steampunk submarine shaped like a giant fish? My own original acrylic painting.

Hyakki Yakō - Japanese Yokai Parade Shirt

$22.70

Hyakki Yakō - Japanese Yokai Parade Shirt

I've long been a fan of Japanese art - particularly ukiyo-e, woodcuts, and scrolls that feature the wonderful folklore, Shinto beliefs, supersitions, ghosts, goblins, supernatural and magical sides to Japanese thought. I studied Asian art history and was lucky enough to view a lot of centuries-old artworks firsthand and on a personal basis. After visiting Japan several months back it left an indelible impression on me - in fact I'm going back again next month! But I digress..... here comes some of the background behind tonight's painting - "Hyakki Yakō" is the title - it translates roughly to "Hundred Demon Night Parade". There are several famous scrolls from hundreds of years back that depict this mysterious event - a summer night where all sorts of ghosts, spirits and Yokai walk the streets of the Earth, bringing bad fortune to those living creatures who witness them. Kinda spooky! Famed artists of centuries past like Tosa Mitsunobu, Toriyama Sekien, Utagawa Yoshiiku, and Aotoshi Matsui filled their scrolls with fanciful interpretations of the Hyakki Yakō and recurring characters often showed up - some of which I have included in my painting! You also will see Hyakki Yakō and Yokai references in many more contemporary Japanese cultural works of manga, movies, and anime - notably yokai master Shigeru Mizuki of back in the 1960s, or even Hayao Miyazaki of today. Sorry to be so wordy - just a subject I really like, and wanted to tell you all about, to give some context =) This is my own original acrylic painting. At any rate - I've created my own version of the Hyakki Yakō - with a bit of Strangeling flair of course ;) A dark parade of sinister (yet amusing!) creatures out of Japanese folklore make their nighttime journey against a backdrop of paper lanterns. A fantastic giant skeleton rounds up the back - some of you may recognize him as a nod to 17th century ukiyo-e master Kuniyoshi! At the front of the parade is a Noh-mask sporting noppera bo ghost (you may remember these from my "Faceless Ghosts" painting!), one of my sad looking long-haired big eyed girls is next, clutching a Daruma head (with only one eye filled in - I wonder what her unfulfilled wish is?). Some other noppera bo with Noh masks appear - one seems to actually be a skeleton behind his mask! A Rokuro-kubi is in line - these are creepy - Geisha girl-like ladies who have impossibly long necks that can strech like a snake! A kitsune fox is there, other bakemono and random Yokai, a couple of different Lantern Ghosts, a Karakasa-obake (umbrella spirit) and Bakezouri (the sandal/shoe spirit) are there too. There is so much going on, you could look at it many times and discover things anew! ****REMEMBER - you can make this shirt for men/women/children/babies or make it long sleeved or a Tshirt or a tanktop - and even change the colour! All you need to do is click the "Select a Different Shirt Style" link by the sizing options - customize it just how you like it! It does look best either as shown, or in the dark solid colours, or in black, or in white. All shirts are available up to adults size 6X - just scroll through the Shirt Style options for your style choices in extended sizes!
